Most mechanics have strong opinions about their tools and already own the big ones. The gifts that land are the small things that wear out, get lost or make a long day on concrete easier.
Hands and body
- Mechanic gloves in a style they like. They go through them often.
- A strong hand cleaner and a good hand cream. Grease and solvents are hard on skin.
- A creeper pad or a thick anti-fatigue mat for standing at the bench.
- Good work socks and cushioned insoles. Concrete is hard on feet and knees.
Light and small gear
- A rechargeable work light or headlamp. Better light means fewer dropped bolts.
- A magnetic tray or parts bowl.
- Shop towels, a marker and a small notebook. Plain, useful and used up.
Please avoid buying sockets, wrenches or diagnostic gear unless they asked for a particular piece. Brand and size matter to them.
For the end of the day
A gift card to a favorite restaurant, tickets to a race or a game, or a comfortable chair at home is a real break from work.
What to skip
- Joke signs and "my other car" gifts.
- Big all-in-one tool kits.
- Anything that depends on the make or model of a car you are guessing at.
