Plumbers spend their days under sinks, in crawl spaces and on wet floors. Anything that makes those spots easier on the body is a good place to start. They have also heard every pipe joke there is.
Protect the body
- Knee pads or a thick kneeling pad. Hard floors and tight spaces add up.
- Waterproof or grippy work gloves. Wet, cold hands get sore fast.
- Good work socks and boot insoles. Dry, cushioned feet make a long day better.
- Hand cleaner and hand cream. Hands take a lot of washing.
Light and organization
- A bright headlamp or compact work light. Hands-free light under a cabinet is a daily help.
- A tool bag, bucket organizer or magnetic tray. Ask what they already carry, and keep it modest.
- A good marker and tape measure in a style they like.
Skip specialty tools, gauges and anything that needs the right fit or rating. They will want to pick those out.
Time off the job
A comfortable chair, a gift card for a favorite restaurant, or a small thank-you for a quick fix goes a long way. Nothing replaces a kind word after a late-night call.
What to skip
- Plunger or toilet-themed gag gifts. They have seen them all.
- Cheap tool sets. They own better ones.
- Bulky items. Truck space is limited.
