📘 Beginner's guide to collecting
- Pick a lane. One sport, team or player keeps it fun and affordable.
- Know the box types. Retail (blasters, megas) is cheaper and easy to find; hobby boxes cost more but usually include autographs or relics.
- Learn the words. Rookie card (RC), parallel (colored version), refractor (shiny chrome), numbered (/99 means 99 made), auto (signed), relic (has a piece of jersey).
- Protect cards right away. Penny sleeve, then a top loader. Keep them dry and out of the sun.
- Check sold prices, not asking prices. Use the lookup above.
- Grading: companies like PSA, BGS (Beckett) and SGC score condition from 1 to 10 for corners, edges, surface and centering. Grading costs money and takes time, so it usually only makes sense for valuable cards in great shape.
- Set a budget. Opening packs is a surprise every time; it's a hobby, not an investment plan.
